The Chain of Command and the NCO Support Channel
There is but one chain of command in the army. It is parallel to and reinforced by the NCO support channel. Both are channels of communication used to pass information. In order for the chain of command to function, the NCO support channel must be operating and vice versa.
Notes:
Another source of your authority stems from the combination of the chain of command and the NCO support channel. They automatically provide the authority to get the job done. With such broad authority given to all NCOs, the responsibility to use mature, sound judgement is critical.
To be a good leader, learn what authority you have and where it comes from. Whenever in doubt, ask. Use sound judgement when applying it. Only then will you become a leader respected by soldiers and superiors alike.
